Toyota Yaris
STATUS: New hatchback model for 2020- The subcompact Yaris gets by as much on Toyota's reputation for superior build quality and above-par resale value as it does on styling and overall performance. Of the two available body styles, the sedan traditionally has the most to offer in terms of pure driving enjoyment, mainly because it's built off the Mazda2 platform (in Mexico). For 2020, however, Mazda will also supply the four-door hatchback. It's available in the top two of three Yaris trim levels and will be equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission. A six-speed manual is standard with the sedan, and the automatic is optional. Mazda's 106-horsepower 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine is common to all models. Since the new hatchback is six inches longer than the outgoing iteration, you can count on decent rear-seat passenger space for two adults (three in a pinch) as well as a reasonable amount of stowage room. Interior finishings for both versions are as good or better than you'll find in other entry-level models.
Base price (incl. destination): $16,550 (hatchback); $16,400 (sedan)
Type: Two- /four-door hatchback; four-door sedan
