STATUS: Base V-8 dropped for 2020 - Toyota keeps building on the Tundra's positives in an attempt to be more appealing in a tough segment in which the Ford F-150, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) Ram and the Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra tend to grab most of the headlines (and buyers). While those models are updated and redesigned like clockwork, the Tundra hasn't been completely overhauled in years and continues with minor updates in regular-cab, extended-length Double Cab and four-door CrewMax with its extra-big rear doors. The previously standard 310-horsepower V-8 has been dropped for 2020, leaving the 381-horsepower V-8 as the sole powerplant (and adding more than $2,000 to the base price). It's connected to a six-speed automatic transmission. Four-wheel-drive is optional. Of the six trim levels, the western-themed 1794 Edition is the most over-the-top model. It's built to commemorate the ranch - Toyota purchased a plot of land - where the Tundra is built. The 1794 Edition has saddle-brown leather seats with suede inserts along with just about every imaginable luxury item. The TRD (Toyota Racing Development) Pro package gets blacked-out body pieces, 18-inch black wheels with Michelin off-road tires, and a throaty TRD dual exhaust. It also sports a two-inch lift, more wheel travel and bigger Bilstein-brand shocks with external reservoirs.
